Jason-2 instruments

Jason-2 is carrying a payload of eight instruments : the Poseidon-3 altimeter, the mission's main instrument, which measures range; the AMR radiometer, which measures perturbations due to atmospheric water vapor; three location systems (Doris, LRA and GPSP) and three experimental instruments (Carmen-2, LPT and T2L2). These first five instruments provide full redundancy and measurements for at least three years.

Poseidon-3 altimeter

Poseidon-3 is the mission's main instrument, derived from Poseidon-2 altimeter on Jason-1. It is a compact, low-power, low-mass instrument offering a high degree of reliability. Poseidon-3 is a radar altimeter that emits pulses at two frequencies (13.6 and 5.3 GHz, the second frequency is used to determine electron content in the atmosphere) and analyzes the return signal reflected by the surface. The signal round-trip time is estimated very precisely to calculate the range, after applying corrections. Poseidon-3 will be coupled with Doris/Diode, in order to improve measurements over coastal areas, inland waters and ice. To improve measurement accuracy in such areas, Poseidon-2 is equipped with an open-loop tracking technique.

Advanced Microwave Radiometer (AMR )

This instrument measures radiation from the Earth's surface at three frequencies (18.7, 23.8 and 34.0GHz). Measurements acquired at each frequency are combined to determine atmospheric water vapor and liquid water content. Once the water content is known, we can determine the correction to be applied for radar signal path delays. (Instrument supplied by Nasa).

Location systems

The location systems onboard Jason-2 complement each other to measure the satellite's position on orbit to within two centimeters on the radial component.
The LRA is highly accurate but it requires ground stations that are complex to operate, and its use can be restricted by adverse weather conditions. It is used to calibrate the other two location systems so that the satellite orbit can be determined as accurately as possible. The GPSP (GPS ) acquires data that complement Doris measurements to determine the orbit in real time and to support precise orbit determination.

Doris (Doppler location)

The Doris system uses a ground network of 60 orbitography beacons around the globe, which send signals at two frequencies to a receiver on the satellite. The relative motion of the satellite generates a shift in the signal's frequency (called the Doppler shift) that is measured to derive the satellite's velocity. These data are then assimilated in orbit determination models to keep permanent track of the satellite's precise position (to within three centimeters) on its orbit. (Instrument supplied by Cnes)

GPSP (GPS location )

The GPSP uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the satellite's position by triangulation, in the same way that GPS fixes are obtained on Earth. At least three GPS satellites determine the mobile's exact position at a given instant. Positional data are then integrated into an orbit determination model to track the satellite's trajectory continuously. (Instrument supplied by Nasa)

LRA (laser tracking)

The LRA is an array of mirrors that provide a target for laser tracking measurements from the ground. By analyzing the round-trip time of the laser beam, we can locate where the satellite is on its orbit. (Instrument supplied by Nasa)

Customizable homepage

The new home page is composed of blocks called "widgets".

Rearrange the blocks with a "Click & Drop".

Hide a widget with the cross at the top right. Reset or add a widget with the "wrench" icon. The "User" and "Public" profiles offer a predefined organization.

All the modifications are automatically saved as cookies on your machine so as to enable you to have your own specific AVISO+.

Reading tools

Ease your reading by choosing the page background colour (black/white) and/or by modifying the font size.

Browsing menu and breadcrum trail

To ease your browsing through AVISO+, you can use at any time the main banner items with the interactive submenus or use the browsing menu on the left side of the screen (it is open by default). For more readiness of the page contents, you can fold and unfold the browsing menu by clicking on the tab. At any time you can know where you are thanks to the browsing menu or the breadcrum at the top of the page.

Products search guide

The first submenu of the "Data" banner item leads you to a new search form enabling you to find quickier the product that suits your needs. The list of results is updated according to your selection criteria.

AVISO+ Multimedia

The first submenu of the "Multimedia" banner item leads you to AVISO+ collections of images and videos linked to altimetry and its applications. Have a nice visit!
