SCAT wind-scatterometer
SCAT is a wind-scatterometer working at Ku-band supplied by the Chinese space agency (CNSA) and manufactured by the CAS/CSSAR.
SCAT is a new wind scatterometer concept : a large swath with a rotating antenna ("fan beam concept" proposed by Lin et al.). This combines the advantages of both the pencil beam of Quickscat (a complete azimuth rotation) and the large swaths of ASCAT.
Its rotating fan-beam antenna points at large incidences (18-50°) with two polarization (HH and VV). The large incidence angles enables to characterize the Bragg backscattering, and thus the wind vector at the ocean surface.
