Soprane tracks the ocean in four dimensions

Soprane is an operational ocean forecasting system that continuously monitors, analyses and predicts every ocean movement in the Northeast Atlantic. Soprane couples real-time surface observations from altimetry satellites with a numerical ocean model which propagates these observations in four dimensions, i.e., horizontally and vertically to characterize the ocean in three dimensions, then over time to generate forecasts for up to the next two weeks.

Soprane thus monitors every eddy and front that triggers the incessant variations in the ocean continuously and in real time. Developed by Shom, the French Navy's hydrography and oceanography department, this system generates weekly ocean bulletins for naval ships and oceanographic research vessels.
