FSLE - Maps of Finite Size Lyapunov Exponents and Orientations of the associated eigenvectors

Types of dataset: multimission altimeter products derived from Ssalto/Duacs products.
DOI: 10.24400/527896/a01-2022.002 - more metadata
Contents: multimission altimetry-derived gridded backward-in-time Finite Size Lyapunov Exponents and Orientations of associated eigenvectors. These products have been computed in collaboration between CLS, LOcean, CTOH and Cnes.
Use: study of ocean variability in different domains of the biology (mesoscale and sub-mesoscale circulation, seasonal variation...), assimilation, ....
Condition of access : These products are delivered for any purposes as stated in the licence agreement
Description: gridded product, provided in delayed time and routine production of 20-day latency. As a snapshot, each map represents the sea state for a given day. One spatial resolution is available: 1/25°x1/25° on a cartesian grid.
Detailed description: a complete description is available as well as some examples of applications.
Geographic coverage: global
Format: NetCDF-4 Classic with CF standards.

Code delivery: The method was initiated by F. d'Ovidio, LOcean. The products are delivered via the Aviso+ website. The source code is also distributed open source if you intend to apply your own parameters and/or in regional area (see code delivery). To use the code, please cite : "The code used to compute Finite Size Lyapunov Exponents, was developed in collaboration between LOCEAN (F. d'Ovidio) and CLS, is available under GNU General Public License".
Since version DT2024, the code used is described here: https://py-eddy-tracker.readthedocs.io/en/stable/python_module/07_cube_manipulation/pet_fsle_med.html (Copyright 2019, A. Delepoulle & E. Mason)
Description: this product is calulated with maps of up-to-date datasets using all missions available at a given time (up to 9 satellites) which is the best in quality but not homogeneous over the time period.
