New ocean tide model FES2014 on Aviso

Category: Website updates

Aviso is pleased to announce the new ocean tide model FES2014 with elevations, load and currents tidal constituants.

Aviso is pleased to announce the new tide model FES2014 (elevations, load and currents) available on a regular grid of 1/16°. FES is a finite elements hydrodynamic model which assimilates in-situ data and altimeter data (Topex/ Poseidon, Jason-1, Jason-2, T/P interleaved - J1 interleaved, ERS-1, ERS-2, and Envisat).

This new version FES2014 can be downloaded from the Aviso+ :

  • If you are not yet registered, please fill in the <link internal-link>registration form to get access this product. Ask for FES2014 Oceanic Tides Heights or/and FES2014 Oceanic Tides Currents (Oceanic Tide Currents are delivered for scientific purposes only as stated in the <media 14286 - - "TEXT, License Aviso, License_Aviso.pdf, 339 KB">licence agreement</media>).
  • If you are already subscribed to the previous tide model FES2012 for heights: you have automatically access to the new tide model FES2014 for elevations and load constituents with your same login/password on the FTP server.
  • If you are already subscribed to the previous tide model FES2012 for currents: you have automatically access to the new tide model FES2014 for currents with your same login/password on the FTP server
  • Unlike the FES2012 delivery where the software is delivered on the FTP server, FES2014 tidal prediction software is available on <link https: bitbucket.org cnes_aviso fes>bitbucket.org/cnes_aviso/fes

Main improvements between FES2014 and FES2012 are:

  • refinement of the finite element mesh (~2.9 million nodes = 50% more than FES2012)
  • new global bathymetry including most recent global and regional datasets and specific filtering in some regions
  • improved coastlines in coastal regions
  • optimized assimilation scheme
  • improved physic, particularly for the Hudson Bay region simulation
  • assimilation of long time series of altimetric data with improved altimeter standards (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1, Jason-2, TPN-J1N,  ERS-1, ERS-2 end Envisat): crossovers and along-track data
  • assimilation of tidal gauges
  • several  non linear hydrodynamic waves are included: M4, M6, M8, MN4, MS4, MKS2, N4, S4, MSf (great benefits for coastal areas)
  • S2 tide benefits from a specific atmospheric forcing computed from ECMWF 3h-DCDA-analysis
  • six long period hydrodynamic waves are used: Mf, Mm, Mtm, Msqm, Ssa, Sa (and removed from the Cartwright long period equilibrium tide algorithm)
  • elevations, currents and tidal loading effects are available. Notice that two elevation datasets are provided: the extrapolated dataset corresponds to the FES2014b elevations grid which have been extrapolated on shores and this extrapolated tide solution is used in the altimeter GDRs.
  • the gridded resolution of the distributed package is 1/16°
