Mediterranean tides on the move
Image of the Month - December 2013
Total tidal amplitude for the Mediterranean, as computed for Feb. 10, 2013 at 00h00. The considerably bigger amplitude of the Atlantic tide is shown by the red color, while the tide amplitude in the Mediterranean reaches about 2 m off Tunisia. The Mediterranean Sea is the sea where some of the oldest tide gauge time series are available. Nonetheless, the knowledge of tides in this enclosed sea has greatly benefitted from altimetry. With the long time series now available, the computers and the refining of models, tide predictions are improving, including in the open seas.
